Covington County Hospital Goes beyond Requirements to Achieve Full Accreditation

(Collins, MS) Covington County Hospital announces the successful achievement of full accreditation, demonstrating that it meets or exceeds the patient safety standards of the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS does not require accreditation. Covington County Hospital voluntarily sought that status in order to confirm that it is giving its patients the best possible care. The accreditation, earned through DNV GL-Healthcare, also integrates the ISO 9001 Quality Management System, an international set of best-practice standards for business management.

"Achieving accreditation is consistent with our long-term commitment to quality and safety for our patients," said Director of Quality, Kathe Bryant, RN. "The ability to integrate ISO 9001 quality standards with our clinical and financial processes means that we're also operating as efficiently as possible from a business standpoint. That's crucial to ensuring that we remain open right here in this community to serve our friends and neighbors for many, many years to come."

DNV GL-Healthcare is one of several private organizations approved by CMS to conduct accreditations. It's the only one that integrates the ISO 9001 system. DNV GL's accreditation program, called NIAHO (Integrated Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations), involves hospital surveys taken every year instead of the usual every three years. It also encourages hospitals to share information across departments and to improve clinical work flows and safety protocols.

"We have taken an entirely different approach to accreditation, and hospitals are really responding," said DNV GL-Healthcare CEO Patrick Horine. "Since accreditation is a must-have credential for just about every hospital in this country, why not make it more valuable and get more out of it? That's where ISO 9001 comes into play and turns the typical get-your-ticket-punched accreditation exercise into a quality transformation."

DNV GL helps businesses assure the performance of their organizations, products, people, and supply chains through certification, verification, assessment, and training services. The DNV GL Group operates in more than 100 countries. For more information about DNV GL hospital accreditation, visit
